Maura S. Doyle, Clerk of the Supreme Judicial Court for the County of Suffolk, has endorsed Steve Tompkins in his bid to remain serving as the Sheriff of Suffolk County.
“I wholeheartedly support Steve Tompkins for Sheriff of Suffolk County,” said Ms. Doyle. “Sheriff Tompkins has already demonstrated an unwavering commitment to public safety, crime prevention and the halt to youth violence throughout all the neighborhoods of Boston, Winthrop, Chelsea and Revere. He also has a proven record of developing innovative recovery and employment programs for those in his charge in a relentless effort to stop the tide of recidivism. As your only elected leader at the highest level of the judicial branch of government, I ask you to join me in supporting Steve Tompkins for Sheriff of Suffolk County.”
Returning the sentiments of mutual admiration, Sheriff Tompkins said, “I am thrilled to have Maura’s endorsement. Maura is something of an historical figure, having been the first woman to ever hold her position as Suffolk County’s Clerk of the Supreme Judicial Court and the first woman to be elected to Suffolk County-wide office. But, she’s done more than just break new ground; she’s proven to be a great citizens’ advocate and she has executed her position with distinction. I’m honored to be able to count her among my supporters.”
Steven W. Tompkins, a member of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department since 2002, was appointed to serve as the Sheriff of Suffolk County on January 22nd, 2013 by Governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick. As the Sheriff of Suffolk County, Tompkins manages all operations at the Suffolk County House of Correction, the Nashua Street Jail and the Civil Process Division. In addition to providing care, custody and rehabilitative support for inmates and pre–trial detainees, Tompkins also oversees a management, security and administrative staff of over 1,000. Sheriff Tompkins holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Boston College and a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs from the University of Massachusetts.
